wamkelekile - welcome back

Wamkelekile - Welcome Back" is a short film about an estranged son, Lukhanyo, who reunites with his mentally challenged father, Simpiwe, for the first time in ten years. Lukhanyo must attempt to bring back his father to the city to be taken care of by a relative.

Lukhanyo is quickly reminded of the reasons he left his father. Simpiwe is weird, eccentric and difficult. If any of his strange interests fall out of place and time, Simpiwe turns into a stubborn child. Eventually, Lukhanyo finds himself stuck in the middle of the nowhere surrounded by the beautiful wide landscapes of the South African Cape West Coast.

It is in this setting that Lukhano begins to notice for the first time, his father’s special way of expressing his love for him. “Welcome back” is a simple, universal and light hearted story about how a young man finds his place in time and his place in his fathers heart.

The film features music from acclaimed international artists such as Hot Water, Matt Costa and Jack Johnson. The soundtrack also features the works of Claude Morcos and Wheeler Sparks. The film is primarily in isiXhosa and is shot in the beautiful medium of 16mm film.
